The decree founding the National Library was issued on 8 July 1984, after years of consultation between the Ministry of Culture and a group of Syrian intellectuals and historians. The Library was first hosted in a wing of the National Museum in Damascus and moved to its current building in 1989.
Since the early 2000s, the Library has been engaged in ambitious digitization projects and has built modern laboratories for paper and manuscript conservation.
